Overview

The Rare Tamnavulin Single Malt 50 Years Old Distiller’s One of One

Details

You’ll find Tamnavulin Distillery in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains on the southern edge of the world’s most famous whisky-making region – Speyside.

Constructed on the site of a picturesque 16th carding mill, our purpose-built distillery is looked after by a passionate and dedicated team of skilled craftsmen, who balance tradition and modernity to create a signature Speyside single malt whisky.

Ahead of celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2026, Tamnavulin’s whisky making team has taken the opportunity to evaluate our spectacular aged whisky stocks. The pinnacle of this assessment is the bottling of our oldest ever release: this unique 50 Years Old Tamnavulin Single Speyside Malt, created by legendary Master Distiller, Richard Paterson.

Initially filled into American white oak Bourbon barrels, then transferred into a Graham’s 1994 Vintage Port Pipe in 2018 where it remained until it was transferred into glass Bonbonnes in 2023. It is presented at Natural Strength 40.8% & Natural Colour, Distilled 24th November 1972 (remained in a Glass Bonbonne for 2 Years).

In view of the distillery’s exceptional Sherry & Wine seasoning wood programme – of which this release is exemplary - it is not surprising that Tamnavulin today is the world’s fastest growing Single Malt.

The iconic mill and waterwheel still stand beside our distillery, and their image adorns every bottle of our classic Speyside single malt; this release is no exception. Handcrafted by Glencairn Crytal, the unique etched decanter and oak presentation box enhance both the liquid and its heritage at a pivotal point in the distillery’s history. Natural Strength (40.8% ABV) & colour.

Tasting Notes

By Master Blender Richard Paterson:

Colour: Deep rich mahogany with golden copper highlights..

Nose: An assemblage of luxury unfolds before you, displaying outstanding finesse and elegance, with enticing aromas of rum-kissed raisins, succulent peaches dipped in kirsch, Madagascan vanilla with a hint of cassis. These nuances are further enhanced by aromas of the aged Vintage Port which reflects juicy Victoria plums, apricots with hints of ginseng, Amarena cherries and scents of Black Forest fruits. Toffee apple and crushed almonds linger pleasantly in the background.

Taste: When it comes to tasting this unique masterpiece the secret is to hold this iconic spirit long on the palate. The warmth of your tongue will help release these many hidden treasures: old English marmalade, soft chewy liquorice with hints of aged Balsamic. There is striking persistence and structural amplitude in the assemblage as another level of sophistication comes into play resonating hints of Napolean cake soaked in Manuka honey, ginger spice, toasted pistachios and bitter chocolate. A noble Speyside Single Malt of rare profundity.
